SUMMARY:Courageous Inquiry and the Work of Restoring Relationships
DESCRIPTION:What did your schooling teach you not to see about the Land beneath your school\, about Indigenous history\, about your responsibility to the earth? That unseeing is the root of the climate crisis in education. Moving through six outdoor phases from individual reflection to collective commitment\, this workshop explores four challenges at the intersection of climate\, Land\, and K-12 systems: reproducing harm unintentionally\, finding authentic voices\, building capacity\, and navigating the inertia keeping climate justice peripheral. An embodied activity makes the shift from transactional to relational pedagogy tangible. Small groups ask: what would it mean to design schools\, not just lessons\, from a regenerative orientation? The workshop closes in a standing circle held by Kimmerer's vision of reciprocity. Each participant names one thing to unlearn and one relationship to restore.\n\nConnected to the forthcoming Courageous Inquiry (TC²)\, with guidance from Dr. Marie Battiste.

SUMMARY:The Wild Path Home – Raising the Earth Stewards of Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:How do we raise a generation ready to care for each other and the planet? In this workshop\, Jacob Rodenburg\, invites leaders to explore a practical framework for cultivating Earth stewards from birth to adulthood. Rooted in 30 age-linked “Landmarks\,” the Pathway weaves together families\, schools\, and entire communities in a shared commitment to nurturing environmental responsibility. This is systems change in action: shifting from isolated programs to an integrated\, community-wide approach that restores relationships between children\, nature\, and community. Through stories\, strategies\, and examples from the field\, participants will discover how this model can be adapted to their own contexts\, inspiring leaders to build the networks of care and connection to the Earth - for our children and our planet\, so urgently needed.

SUMMARY:Integrating the Rs of Reconciliation into Educational Frameworks
DESCRIPTION:Respect\, Responsibility\, Reciprocity\, Relevance\, Relationships\, Representation\, and Recognition are often named—but what do they actually look like in practice?\nHow are we showing up in relationship to the land our schools sit on\, and to the First Peoples of those places? Where are these Rs already present in our work\, and where are they still missing?\nJoin Jenna as she walks through each R\, drawing from her own research\, and ongoing learning within Kenpèsq̓t (Shuswap Band)\, where she is a registered member. This session will create space to think together\, ask honest questions\, and consider how these teachings can live within.

SUMMARY:K̓wsaltktnéws ne Secwepemcúl’ecw – Indigenous Day of Learning
DESCRIPTION:In May 2025\, K̓wsaltktnéws ne Secwepemcúl’ecw (School District 83) shifted our approach to Indigenous Day of Learning. The school district worked closely together with the four Nations – Adams Lake\, Neskonlith\, Skwlāx\, and Splatsin – to plan experiences focused on place-based learning that were\, for the most part\, in communities. All 1200 district staff members as well as the staff from Shihiya\, the First Nations school at Splatsin\, no matter their role\, took part in the day\, with the end-goal of helping staff to get to know more about this area and most importantly\, about the inherent Rights Holders who have been stewards of this land since time immemorial. During the workshop\, we will share our collaborative planning process\, important lessons we learned along the way\, by engaging participants in an interactive story of our local territory and the 2026 Indigenous Day of Learning.

SUMMARY:From Compliance to Community Outdoors: Rights-Informed Structures for Safer\, More Inclusive Outdoor Learning
DESCRIPTION:Outdoor learning often stalls not because leaders lack belief\, but because schools lack shared structures for safety\, inclusion\, voice\, and response when things get messy outside. This interactive workshop introduces a rights-informed approach that helps leaders move from compliance-based control toward practical structures that support outdoor learning in real school contexts. Drawing on the Web of Rights\, Dr. McCuaig will use cases connected to play\, movement\, boundaries\, consent\, and shared space to help participants think through common tensions such as noise\, active play\, safety\, belonging\, and equitable participation. Leaders will leave with concrete planning prompts\, discussion structures\, and implementation moves they can use to strengthen staff confidence\, reduce friction\, and build more inclusive outdoor learning conditions across classrooms and schools.

SUMMARY:Reimagining Education Through Land\, Community\, and Real-World Learning: A Relational Approach for Leaders
DESCRIPTION:This interactive workshop invites leaders to experience a relational\, land- and community-based approach to learning inspired by The Howl Experience. Participants will begin with a hands-on\, skill-building activity led by a community voice\, followed by a guided reflection circle grounded in relational and land-based perspectives. From there\, leaders will reflect on their own contexts and explore how real-world\, experiential learning can increase student engagement\, belonging\, and relevance.\n\nDrawing on programs across Canada\, this session highlights how connecting youth to land\, community\, and meaningful work leads to improved attendance\, stronger relationships\, and deeper learning. Leaders will leave with practical insights on how to open the classroom to community\, empower educators\, and begin integrating experiential learning into existing systems.

SUMMARY:Think Big\, Start Small: What It Takes for System‑Wide Nature‑Based Education to Take Root
DESCRIPTION:School leaders are increasingly asked to improve student engagement and learning outcomes while supporting staff well‑being\, often all within the confines of urban\, space‑limited environments. This session will explore how Nature‑based Education can be a practical\, school‑ready strategy\, not an added initiative or logistical burden. Leaders will learn how the Nature Education Collective is working collaboratively with school district staff across Canada to support system‑wide integration of NbE. With examples from the Calgary Catholic School District\, a guided outdoor learning walk will feature stops aligned with student programming\, teacher professional learning\, instructional leads\, and system‑level dialogue. Leaders will engage with real stories and focused reflection to explore how small\, intentional approaches that leverage schoolyards\, nearby green spaces\, and curriculum‑aligned practices can support sustainable\, scalable integration of NbE\, regardless of location.

SUMMARY:When Space Becomes Pedagogy: Leading Outdoor Learning Systems Change
DESCRIPTION:This session explores how school leaders can drive system-level change in outdoor learning through redesign of spaces\, policies\, and culture. Drawing on the transformation of outdoor environments at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study Laboratory School\, participants will examine how leadership supported the integration of outdoor play\, land-based learning\, and Indigenous-informed practices in an urban context. Grounded in Natural Curiosity’s inquiry-based framework\, the session highlights initiatives such as implementing the OPAL approach to shift recess culture and risk practices\, redesigning a playground\, and developing naturalized spaces including a courtyard ecosystem and Indigenous teaching garden. Attendees will gain practical strategies for stakeholder engagement\, policy development\, and addressing barriers to embed outdoor learning across their systems.

SUMMARY:Connecting Mathematics to Place\, Community\, Culture\, and Identity
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive session\, we will investigate pedagogical practices that enhance mathematical learning in the outdoors by connecting to place\, community\, culture\, and identity. Supports\, research\, and resources needed to enact learning mathematics outdoors at the school\, district\, and system-level will be shared. Barriers such as parental concerns\, funding\, and weather will be problematized and discussed. As we think about both teacher and student well-being\, we will consider how a more holistic\, embodied\, and interdisciplinary approach to learning mathematics outdoors might bring a sense of connectedness\, belonging\, and joy to our work together. Guiding questions for this session will include: How might mathematics be explored outdoors? and How might place inspire mathematical thinking and enhance learning?

SUMMARY:Outdoor Learning in the School/District strategic literacy plan: Chasing trees\, throwing pinecones\, and grounding ourselves in place to improve results.
DESCRIPTION:Literacy goals as part of a district/school strategic plan are as permanent a fixture as there are leaves or needles on trees! Well\, speaking of trees... What if learning outside was part of the systemic strategy to achieve these goals? In this workshop\, we will experience ways in which a collaboration with an Indigenous Education department and centering learning outdoors from the onset can contribute to improving literacy results. We will briefly present the example of a school in British -Columbia and extrapolate this to your own school or district. Let's look at how to set systemic structures around literacy goals by trying out activities that enhance literacy skills\, physical literacy\, and Indigenous perspectives. By the end of the session\, leaders will leave with five activities to enhance literacy goals\, ideas from new session-friends\, and ways to invite Indigenous partners into the broader conversation to enhance student success. Be prepared to run\, throw\, chat\, and think!

SUMMARY:Decolonizing Risk in Outdoor Learning: Responsibility\, Relationality\, and Institutional Practice
DESCRIPTION:This workshop examines how institutional approaches to risk management shape outdoor and experiential learning\, particularly in relation to land-based and Indigenous-informed pedagogy. While often treated as neutral tools for safety and compliance\, risk frameworks also influence what learning is possible\, whose knowledge is prioritized\, and how relationships with land are enacted. The session invites leaders and administrators to critically examine assumptions within risk-averse decision-making that privilege control and liability over relational\, cultural\, and educational possibility. Participants engage in dialogue and reflection to consider both visible risks of action and less visible risks of inaction\, including reduced engagement\, curiosity\, and relational learning. The session explores how risk practices might be reimagined to better reflect diverse cultural perspectives\, relational accountability\, and decolonizing approaches to outdoor education and institutional leadership.

SUMMARY:Nurtured By Nature: Enhancing Mental Health for Staff\, Students\, and Families Through the Outdoors
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore time outside as a core element of district mental health support planning. A model will be shared of a district mental health plan in which learning about mental health and social emotional learning are intertwined with creating community and spending time in nature. Leaders will reflect on how their own district and school approach to mental health could be enhanced with an intentional infusion of nature. Specific examples of low to no-cost strategies and resources will be provided for leaders to consider alongside the tools\, resources\, and community partnerships they already have. The symmetry of approaches with staff and students will be highlighted. Come learn and contribute to the conversation about how to support an outdoor culture for healthier school environments and communities.

SUMMARY:Learning With the Land - An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:What does it actually mean to “learn with the land”—and how can this look in real school and district contexts? In this interactive outdoor session\, participants will experience four simple\, repeatable nature routines—sit spot\, nature walk\, nature journaling\, and circle—and explore how these connect to the Spiral of Inquiry. Grounded in a place-based and inclusive approach\, this session highlights how small\, consistent practices can shift teaching and learning over time. Together\, we’ll examine how leaders can support staff in getting started\, building confidence\, and embedding outdoor learning into everyday routines. Leaders will leave with practical strategies\, adaptable frameworks\, and a clearer understanding of how to scale outdoor learning across classrooms and schools.

SUMMARY:Students as Change Agents: Empowering Youth to Lead Climate Action
DESCRIPTION:Youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow\; they are essential actors today in the fight against climate change. Yet too often\, children and young people are framed as passive victims rather than capable agents of change. This interactive workshop equips educators and school system leaders with practical strategies to intentionally position students as central drivers of environmental action and climate justice by showcasing replicable climate initiatives that affirm students as powerful\, capable change agents now.\nDrawing on experiences from the EcoSchools program\, which already offers diverse opportunities for students to collectively contribute to planetary health\, we will explore a critical question: How do we systematically strengthen students' leadership skills\, confidence\, and agency as change agents?

SUMMARY:Respectful inclusion of Indigenous Knowledge Systems: Moving at the speed of trust
DESCRIPTION:The education system plays an important role in the Calls to Action by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. The K-12 curriculum in British Columbia reflects these calls but teachers report feeling not knowledgeable enough and concerned about respectful inclusion of Indigenous knowledge. At a leadership level\, how can we support educators with learning opportunities and resources so they can do the important work of including Indigenous knowledge systems in their outdoor learning teaching practice? Are professional development sessions and resources enough? In this dialogic session\, examine how Ocean Networks Canada's K-12 education team has co-developed a series of resources that integrate Indigenous knowledge\, ocean science\, and data exploration. Discuss the team's important insight that relationships with community members move at the speed of trust and explore the implications this has on the inclusion of Indigenous knowledge in the school system.

SUMMARY:Designing Citizen Science for Climate Change Education
DESCRIPTION:Today’s system leaders need to be environmentally responsive and climate predictive. We must design educational systems and frameworks that emphasize adaptable thinking and learning strategies so that all our stakeholders have the knowledge and skills necessary to mitigate our environmental impact and adapt to climate realities. In this session\, participants will observe how data visualization techniques and applications can be used to take immediate and future action to address the challenges of climate change through citizen science in the analysis of real-time patterns. We will examine readily available data to better design future strategic plans meant to curb emissions now and in the future by building capacity in this generation of leaders and the next.

SUMMARY:Leading Through Kinship: Practical Pathways for Land-Connected Outdoor Learning
DESCRIPTION:This interactive 75-minute outdoor session invites school and system leaders to explore how kinship-centred\, land-connected learning can become a practical part of school experience for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students alike. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action have a key educational calls to action (#62- 65) which explicitly relate to our work with Kinship Club\, bannock making with Grade 5 students\, and learning with Elders in the school. Outdoor learning can grow through relationship\, story\, food\, making\, and community partnership. Grounded in wahkohtowin\, this session shows how leaders can move beyond one-time cultural events toward sustained\, inclusive practices that strengthen belonging\, Indigenous student identity\, family-school connection\, and interculturalism. Participants will leave with concrete examples\, leadership strategies\, and practical first steps for removing barriers and supporting outdoor learning in their own schools and systems

SUMMARY:Building Capacity for Outdoor and Place-Based Learning: What System Leaders Can Put in Place
DESCRIPTION:Outdoor and place-based learning thrives when the conditions around teachers are intentionally designed to support it. A recent doctoral case study of three Calgary teachers\, completed by Alexandra (Sam) Ross under the supervision of Dr. Erin Spring at the Werklund School of Education\, identifies the institutional conditions that allow this work to take root and spread.\nThis session focuses on what system leaders can build. Five conditions emerged as the strongest predictors of sustained practice: collegial teaching partnerships\, mentorship structures pairing experienced practitioners with developing ones\, administrative stances that actively champion outdoor learning\, staffing decisions that include students with complex needs\, and system-level prioritization that names this work as a district commitment.\nParticipants will reflect on their own districts and leave with one clear action they can take this term.

SUMMARY:From Programs to Systems: Embedding Land-Based Learning Across an Education Ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:Outdoor learning is often delivered as occasional programming or enthusiastic individual teacher initiatives. Systems change requires something different: leadership structures\, partnerships\, operational planning\, and community relationships that allow land-based learning to become part of the educational fabric.\n\nThis outdoor workshop shares practical lessons from building land-based learning across an entire education ecosystem in partnership with a First Nations community in northern British Columbia. Leaders will explore how outdoor learning can connect K-12 schooling\, adult education\, employment training\, and post-secondary pathways while supporting Indigenous language\, culture\, and student wellbeing.\n\nThrough a short case study\, walking discussion\, and collaborative planning activities\, participants will identify strategies for building leadership support\, addressing operational barriers\, and creating sustainable outdoor learning structures within their own districts.

SUMMARY:Thriving and walking together through climate uncertainty
DESCRIPTION:How might schools begin the inspiring (and challenging) work of preparing young children for an uncertain future? What skills\, knowledges\, and practices will they need? During this workshop\, we will work collaboratively with educational leaders in an emergent and responsive way to think concretely about uncertainty. We believe nourishing educational leaders with space to think in this way will help K-12 learners thrive in the already-unfolding future. Our session will include a story walk\, a collaborative mind map\, and a culminating discussion. This is inspired by two workshops we co-facilitated with BC educators in 2024\, which you can read about here: https://accelerating-cce.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Climate-Change-Education-Otherwise.pdf

SUMMARY:Honouring the Heart of Indigenous Teachings - Learning from the land through joyful and playful experiences
DESCRIPTION:The work in Indigenous Education in Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division (SRPSD) is led by our Elders Advisory Council. SRPSD serves a diverse student population in Prince Albert and surrounding area\, located on Treaty 6 Territory in North Central Saskatchewan. With 59% of students self-identifying as Indigenous\, SRPSD is deeply committed to integrating experiential\, play-based and land-based learning into its education approach. In recent years\, SRPSD has developed an Experiential Play-Based and Land-Based Learning Models to ensure systematized approach to this pedagogy. Rooted in Indigenous Worldview with the voice of our Elders\, this work fosters meaningful\, hands-on learning experiences for all students that connect learners to their environment and culture. This aligns to our school division strategic plan. We will share our school division's story highlighting the impact of these transformative teaching and learning practices.

SUMMARY:Leading the Shift: Building a Culture of Sustainability and Well-being
DESCRIPTION:How do system leaders move outdoor learning from a "token field trip" into the institutional DNA of a school? This interactive workshop delivers the blueprint. Drawing from a 33-year career and the empirical validation of the "Limehouse Model" (a five-year consecutive EcoSchools Platinum site)\, this session tackles the specific challenges school leaders face: navigating bureaucracy\, managing risk anxiety\, and shifting staff mindsets.\n\nParticipants will discover how to dismantle systemic barriers to outdoor education by centering student and staff mental health\, LSF goals\, and Indigenous ways of knowing. We will explore how land-based learning naturally drives high academic achievement\, proving that standardized testing metrics shouldn't compromise the human spirit. Leaders will leave with actionable strategies to mentor their own teams\, protect staff well-being\, and turn holistic sustainability into a living reality.

SUMMARY:Setting educators up for success in outdoor learning experiences: A leadership collaborative
DESCRIPTION:Based on my interview findings through my doctoral research paired with discussion results from teacher participants at the Outdoor Learning Conference in May of 2026\, this session will highlight and problem solve collaboratively around issues being faced in outdoor learning. As leaders\, we will identify common issues (such as resources\, knowledge\, mindset\, regulation\, building relationships...). These will be aligned with my research findings around elements for success in outdoor experiential learning. As a group\, we will seek and analyze potential ways forward through challenges. Together we will collaborate to create a bank of approaches in order to best support educators to take learning outside applicable to our specific contexts.

SUMMARY:Where Learning Happens: Reimagining schools as embedded in systems of reciprocity with social and environmental communities
DESCRIPTION:This workshop invites administrators\, and leaders to consider the questions: “Where does learning happen?” and why this question in not a more prominent inquiry for K-12 schools. Where learning happens is extremely important for all teachers in their day-to-day professional judgement (does the lesson happen at desks? in the library? online?)\, yet discussions about where learning happens in educational contexts are uncommon. Discussions about land-based\, outdoor and place-based learning\, for example\, are essentially where conversations. Learning out of the school\, in nature and community\, so that the world might be part of the human community. Educational leaders very-well know that where is a significant dimension to pedagogy yet struggle to make where more central to school discourse and practice. In re-positioning where as a pedagogical area on equal footing with curriculum (the what) and pedagogy (the who/how).

SUMMARY:Building a Culture of “Yes" - Risk\, Responsibility\, and Relational Accountability in Land-based Learning
DESCRIPTION:Within many education systems\, outdoor learning is frequently constrained by risk-averse policies and operational practices that limit opportunities for meaningful engagement with the land. While these approaches are often grounded in concerns for student safety\, they can inadvertently create systemic barriers that restrict access to experiential and land-based learning. This session examines how a shift toward a “culture of yes” requires a reorientation of how risk\, responsibility\, and accountability are understood at a system level. Drawing on the work of the Indigenous Land-Based Education (ILBE) Learning Table\, this workshop explores how Indigenous perspectives can inform more relational and balanced approaches to decision-making. In this context\, responsibility is understood as a shared and relational practice among educators\, school leaders\, divisional administrators\, communities\, and a relationship with the land itself.

SUMMARY:Understanding how outdoor learning influences the physical and mental health and wellbeing of the school community
DESCRIPTION:There is a growing body of evidence that supports what many people already feel\, time in nature and outdoor spaces supports physical\, social\, cognitive\, and emotional health. As little as 2 hours per week outdoors in a natural environment can have significant benefits for health and wellbeing. Childhood exposure to green spaces may track into more positive mental health outcomes in adulthood. Despite this\, time in outdoor spaces is not equitably accessed. Schools allow for an equitable approach to ensuring all children spend time outdoors during the week. Outdoor learning provides a unique opportunity to support the health and wellbeing of all students\, and school staff that is low to no cost. In this workshop we will break down the benefits of outdoor learning\, while exploring the challenges and opportunities schools face in implementing regular outdoor learning. Leaders will leave with an understanding of why outdoor learning is more than a nice to have\, but a need to have.
